Project type: Mass concrete pour temperature control
Equipment delivered: 2 × 40-ton evaporative-cooled freshwater flake ice systems
Capacity per unit: 1.67 tons/hour, 24/7 continuous operation
Control: PLC-automated ice storage and delivery
Target market: Australia
A common constraint across Australian concrete projects is a narrow window for controlling concrete placement temperature. At ambient temperatures in the 42°C range, crews have long relied on midnight pours to chase lower batching temperatures. But even at night, heat-driven cracking remains a risk — and once cracking occurs, the cost of rework in materials, labor, and schedule far exceeds the original pour.
Coastal projects add another layer: prolonged exposure to salt-spray corrosion places material and corrosion-resistance demands on equipment beyond standard configurations.
ICESTA configured two 40-ton evaporative-cooled freshwater flake ice systems for this project, with a design logic centered on continuous ice supply, reduced manual intervention, and mix consistency:
Capacity and continuity: each flake ice machine produces 1.67 t/h, running 24/7; two systems in parallel cover the ice demand of large-scale pours.
Automated storage and discharge: ice enters an insulated storage unit managed by PLC for on-demand release. A built-in raker prevents caking and enables forwarding as required. No waiting for ice during daytime peak demand.
Delivery to point: screw and pneumatic conveying deliver ice to any designated location on site, with nearly zero manual labor.
Mix stability: the flake ice is dry, with no dripping water, so it does not introduce excess free water into the mix and helps maintain a stable water-binder ratio.
Environmental fit: the system is custom-engineered for high-temperature operation and salt-spray corrosion, reducing environmental interference with equipment reliability.
The core value of this configuration is not ice production per se, but the shift from a time-window-dependent manual process to a PLC-managed, storage-and-delivery-linked automated flow. Crews are no longer forced to compress pours into midnight hours; daytime peaks can draw on a stable ice supply. Ice loss is reduced, labor costs come down, and the rework risk associated with temperature excursions decreases accordingly.
For ready-mix plants, precast yards, and large infrastructure projects in Australia and comparable hot, humid, coastal-corrosive environments, this configuration offers a replicable reference model: 40-ton-class flake ice machines paired with PLC-controlled storage and automated conveying — balancing “sufficient capacity” against “controllable operating cost”.
